Soil Moisture and Temperature Monitoring and Automatic Watering System for Tomato Plants based on the Internet of Things (IoT)

Irfan Ade Ryan Musyaffa

Abstract

This study aims to develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system for monitoring soil moisture and temperature and controlling automatic irrigation for tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum). The system is equipped with sensors that measure soil moisture and temperature in real time, with the sensor data transmitted to a cloud platform for monitoring and analysis. The results show that the system can automatically activate or deactivate irrigation to supply water according to the plants’ requirements. Testing demonstrated that the system can monitor soil moisture and temperature in real time and control automatic irrigation based on predefined soil moisture thresholds, thereby supporting more precise and sustainable agricultural practices. The proposed system offers a practical solution for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural land management while contributing to the advancement of contemporary agricultural technology. Furthermore, by providing a more advanced tool for managing plant environmental conditions, the system can assist farmers in responding to weather variability and climate-related challenges. Overall, the findings indicate that the proposed system has the potential to support agricultural productivity while promoting more sustainable farming practices in the future.
